Dr. Cummins is a board certified orthopedic surgeon with a subspecialty in shoulder surgery and sports medicine. He completed his undergraduate education at the University of Florida where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in the college of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Following his undergraduate education he continued at the University of Florida where he graduated from medical school in the top 3% of his class. Following medical school Dr. Cummins moved to Chicago where he completed a surgical internship and orthopedic residency at Northwestern University. His orthopedic training involved working at many of the Chicago land area hospitals, including: Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Children's Memorial Hospital, Evanston Hospital, Lutheran General Hospital, Cook County Hospital and the Lakeside Veteran's Administration Hospital. Following his orthopedic residency, Dr. Cummins pursued subspecialty training in the area of shoulder surgery and the management of sports related injuries. This additional training involved a one-year fellowship in Sydney Australia, through the University of New South Wales, under the direction of Professor George AC Murrell.

In August of 2001, Dr. Cummins joined Lake Cook Orthopedic Associates and has developed an orthopedic practice with a primary focus on the management of shoulder disorders and sports related injuries. He is the team physician for Lake Zurich High School and assists Dr. Locher as a team physician for Barrington High School. Dr. Cummins is well published in the orthopaedic literature and continues to be actively involved in clinical research with a primary focus on patient outcomes. By analyzing how patients recover following therapeutic interventions, Dr. Cummins' is able to better understand how patients improve following non-surgical and surgical treatments. Dr. Cummins is a member and has served as a course instructor for the Arthroscopy Association of North America. He also actively participates as an instructor for various orthopedic companies teaching arthroscopic techniques to orthopedic surgeons across the country. On a more personal note, Dr. Cummins and his wife Becca have been married since 1993 when they attended medical school together. They have three children and their family resides in the Barrington area. His wife practices dermatology in Northbrook Illinois.

Dr. Cummins' philosophy towards treating patients is to meet patients' individual needs through comprehensive evaluation and treatment designed to help them achieve an active, pain-free lifestyle. Many musculo-skeletal conditions can be treated by non-surgical techniques--surgery is just one treatment option. He combines leading edge techniques with proven traditional methods to provide his patients with the best orthopedic care possible. He works to develop a partnership with his patients, which begins with listening not only about the orthopedic injury but how the physical problem affects this patient's life. Together a dialogue is developed, through which his patients understand the diagnostic process, their own unique problem, their treatment choices, and the recovery process. Patients help to guide and direct the diagnostic and treatment activities. It is Dr. Cummins' belief that knowledgeable patients make the best decisions about their own treatment.
